What is Question 2?

Question 2 is a one quarter of one percent sales tax dedicated to public safety personnel to be considered by the Voters of Mesa on the November 2018 Ballot.  The ballot language states that this proposal will be used for the “sole purpose of funding Mesa Police and Mesa Fire & Medical services, personnel, equipment, and training related costs."

Why Do We need Question 2?

With a population rapidly approaching nearly a half a million, Mesa is now the 36th largest city in the nation – larger than Kansas City and Atlanta. With that growth, we have seen a significant increase in our public safety needs.

Overall, the number of emergency incidents in the City of Mesa have grown by over 40% since 2008.  Demand in some areas of East Mesa have grown by as much as 310% in the past 10 years.

How will the money be spent?

Question 2 is a fiscally responsible and transparent proposal. It is a dedicated source of funding for public safety and we will know exactly where the money is going. The language is clear and the city will have an annual plan which will allow taxpayers to know exactly how this money will be spent.

What will be on the ballot?

“Shall the City of Mesa be authorized, for the sole purpose of funding Mesa Police and Mesa Fire & Medical Services, personnel, equipment, and training related costs, to increase the City’s transaction privilege (sales) tax, applicable to all taxable activities in the City of Mesa, by 0.25% from 1.75% to 2.00% beginning March 1, 2019.”
